Professor D. S. Akram

Founder, Chairperson and President

It was under the guidance and leadership of Professor D. S. Akram that HELP came into being.

She completed her M.B.B.S. from University of Karachi, in 1968; Dr. D. S. Akram then proceeded to USA for a Medical Degree and Diplomat American Specialty Boards in Pediatrics status in 1974. In 1981, she completed her Masters' in Public Health (Epidemiology) from Yale University. She has served as Professor and Chairperson- Department of Pediatrics at Dow University of Medical & Health Sciences.

Additionally she has been:

  • National Coordinator for Community Oriented Medical Education (C.O.M.E.), a W.H.O. supported, Government of Pakistan, Programme.
  • Chairperson, Breast-Feeding Steering Committee, Sindh, Pakistan, member NBFSC (Federal)-1992
  • Provincial Coordinator, Lactation Management, BFHI Programme (Sindh, Pakistan)-1992
  • Programme Manager, Nutrition Support Programme, Government of Sindh, Pakistan-1990-2007
  • President, Pakistan Pediatric Association. (2002-2004)
  • Member National Advisory Committee on EPI & Polio-2002-Present
  • National Coordinator, Community Oriented Medical Education (C.O.M.E.). A W.H.O. supported, Government of Pakistan, Programme.

Dr. D. S. Akram has been honored with the Presidents' Gold Medal in 2001 and Pride of Performance Award by the President of Pakistan in 2004. She has also been honored with the Rotary Award. More than sixty of her papers have been published in national and international journals.



Ms. Kausar S. Khan

Vice President

Since 1986 Kausar S Khan, has been with the department of Community Health Sciences, Aga Khan University. Before joining AKU, she was working in three katchi abadis of Karachi on a pilot project of FPAP (Family Planning Association of Pakistan) with a special focus on promoting women's economic activities. She has experience of working in katchi abadis and on women's issues, especially those in poor urban and rural settings.

Her work in rural areas started with a Thatta District Health Systems Project funded by IDRC. Thatta Project became a stepping stone for two great learning experiences:

(1) management training of senior government staff through the world bank funded Family Health Project.

(2) School Nutrition Project in seven districts of Sindh. This was funded by NORAD, and was part of Sindh Primary Education Development Project, being administered by the World Bank. Learning from these experiences provided the foundation for the conceptualization and involvement of the mega project: Tawana Pakistan.

Her formal education has been in humanities and social sciences. Kauser Khan did her Bachelors in Philosophy and Psychology from St Joseph's College, Karachi She has two Masters degrees in Philosophy, one from Karachi University, and the other from Mc Master University, Canada. She was a doctorate candidate in the department of religious studies at McMaster. The department was part of the faculty of Social Sciences. She finished all the doctorate requirements, but returned to Pakistan before defending the thesis.

Her prime areas of teaching, research, and programs, are: community participation; equity; gender; ethics and rights. She likes writing, and occasionally writes for the popular press.



Dr. Fehmina Arif

Dr. Fehmina Arif has been amongst the pioneers of HELP. She completed her MBBS from Dow Medical College Karachi in 1985; she did her DCH in 1996 from University of Karachi and then FCPS from College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan.

She has many publications to her credit. Many of her research papers have been published in medical journals of repute in Pakistan as well as presented in national and international symposium and conferences. At present she is working as Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, and Civil Hospital Karachi.

Dr. Gulrukh Zakir Nensey

Treasurer

Dr. Gulrukh Zakir Nensey obtained her MBBS from University of Karachi in 1982, and DCH from Karachi University in 1998. She is the Joint Secretary of HELP and personally supervises HELP's educational project.

Dr. Gulrukh has special interest & experience in child nutrition and breast-feeding, lactation promotion and problems.

She is presently working as breast feeding consultant & nutrition advisor in Pediatrics Unit - 1, Civil Hospital Karachi.

Dr. Yasmeen completed her MBBS from Dow Medical College in 1982. She did MCPS in family medicine from College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1991. She then proceeded to Saudi Arabia and worked as a specialist in family medicine for fifteen years, in a renowned Hospital in Riyadh. She joined HELP in 2007.

Health Education & Literacy Programme

HELP is a non-government, Community Based Primary Health Care and Education Programme working in various Katchi Abadies of Karachi and Sanghar and has tax exemption status. HELP comprises of professionals including doctors, social workers, chartered accountants, and lawyers, committed to the development of Primary Health Care.
